14th June 2006:
Bywaters has recently invested in three new Toyota Prius', the award-winning hybrid petrol/electric cars, for its account management team to use on short journeys around London.
The fleet will be available for all of the account management team to use for client visits as and when needed. Bywaters' company ethos has always featured environmental responsibility and sustainable development, and the company environmental management system (EMS) has been implemented on three of Bywaters' previous sites. The EMS has been certified to the international standard ISO 14001:2004 and will be transferred to the new premises.
With the new beginnings in Bow, Bywaters has been looking into the feasibility of various environmentally desirable options including the new fleet of Toyota Prius vehicles (the company is also looking at biodiesel as a fleet fuel as a next stage); using wind turbines and solar panels (photovoltaic cells) for renewable energy generation; rainwater harvesting from the new roof (for cleaning vehicles), and other environmental options as they become available.
"The opportunities that the new building is offering Bywaters give great scope for change," says Alan Kirk, Bywaters' Recycling Manager. "We are already at the forefront of technology in the UK with our indoor recycling facility opening in early 2007 - the largest in London. With the south of the UK already experiencing severe dry weather conditions and the effects of climate change being in part attributed to emissions of carbon dioxide from combustion processes, all of the measures that we are suggesting will ease the burden being placed on the environment by industrial processes."
"Taking delivery of the Toyota Prius' is a great case in point," he continues. "The petrol/electric hybrid models are one way forward for London's severely congested communications networks. They will greatly assist in the conscientious responsibilities of us all at Bywaters, to do whatever possible to reduce the harmful effects we collectively have on our environment."
Toyota Prius is now an increasingly popular environmental solution to lowering vehicle emissions in the UK and Bywaters has had to wait one month to receive the seven new Prius.
