9th June 2008:
Bywaters has the pleasure to announce that Dr Alan Kirk has been short listed for the Environment Manager of the year at the Environment and Energy Awards 2008. The selection was carried out over one hundred participants with only three entrants selected for the final draw.

Dr Alan Kirk was selected due to his recent achievements for Bywaters.

Following many months of hard work, the Environmental Management System (EMS) for Bywaters' new Lea Riverside site was certified to ISO14001:2004. More recently, in January 2008, the full implications of the relocation of our plasterboard recycling facility and compactor workshop from sites within the Olympic development area to the site at Lea Riverside required the ISO14001 auditors to ensure that the environmental impact of these operations was fully incorporated into Bywaters' EMS.

The EMS has since been updated again following the new operations with the recovery and baling of beverage cartons on behalf of Tetrapak.

February 2007 saw the successful launch of Bywaters’ Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) accredited Waste Awareness Certificate (WAC) course which Alan runs monthly from Bywaters’ training centre at their Lea Riverside site. This year, Alan also incorporated the CIWM construction module into the WAC course to help the construction industry address the issue of Site Waste Management Plans.

Under Alan's guidance, Bywaters managed to increase their procurement of recycled products and products from sustainable resources by over 90% from the previous year. This resulted in Bywaters winning a Mayor's Green Procurement Code award in December 2007.

All these achievements lead to Alan spearheading the development of environmental consultancy services which the company will be offering its customers later this year.

These are some of the projects and activities that resulted in Alan being nominated for the Environment Manager Award.

The ceremony was held at the International Convention Centre on the eve of 20th May 2008 and filmed by ITN TV. The Award was given to Tube Lines but Bywaters is very proud that Alan made it to the final!
