Monday 16th July 2009:
An electronic waste tracking pilot project, run by the Environment Agency, is underway. The project allows industry and businesses to electronically track the collection, transfer and final destination of their waste and recyclable materials, to help clamp down on fly tipping.

As part of the Waste Crime Innovation Programme (WCIP), Bywaters Recycling and Waste Management is one of six companies in South East England to evaluate, using mobile computer technology, a web-based tracking system to create and maintain electronic Waste Transfer Notes (WTNs).

Bywaters Project Manager, Craig Gregory says: "It is a wonderful opportunity to be working closely with the Environment Agency to identify new recycling opportunities. The move to electronic WTNs will improve the quality of the data we collect and enable us to keep instant track of our waste."

The Electronic Duty of Care trial will enable WTNs to be created and maintained electronically using web-hosted software and mobile computer handsets. This will make the process simpler, faster, and more accurate – reducing the risk of fly tipping and providing increased protection for the environment.

The project is delivering business benefits to Bywaters, including: removing the need to store paper WTNs, speeding up invoicing and capturing electronic signatures to provide proof of service provision.

Keith Cooper, Project Manager for the pilot, says: "All members of the waste supply chain, from waste producers to waste regulators can help play their part in identifying new recycling opportunities that will reduce further damage from our environment. I am delighted that organisations such as Bywaters have embraced the pilot and are showing how successful this can be".

The Electronic Duty of Care pilot was funded by Defra and managed by the Environment Agency, with Codegate Ltd being awarded the contract through a competitive tender process, based on its ability to deliver an end-to-end mobile data collection technology in the timescales required.

The Environment Agency plans to run a second trial phase with a wider take-up of companies, should the initial success of the trial continue.
