Monday 15th July 2009:
Hundreds of local pupils, their teachers and families were joined by Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, on Tuesday 3 July, to mark the opening of Newham’s annual celebration of the best of the borough’s school artwork.

Make it 2, a key feature of the Newham Arts Festival, displays work by over 6,000 pupils from all of Newham’s primary and secondary schools.

Dr Alan Kirk, Bywaters’ Environment Manager, visited the exhibition to get a glimpse of the future of art and design. Alan says: "I greatly enjoy working with schools in Newham, showing the children different slants to recycling, and participating in activities such as paper making. It is wonderful to see the pupils of Kensington Primary School making art out of paper they have made themselves."

Kirsty Baillie Hanicke, Communications Manager, Bywaters continues: "It was a pleasure to see the talent of the local schools on display. It was hard to believe that we were not admiring the work of professional artists. It is good to see that artists of the future are able to embrace the culture of their community and have a platform to display their work. Bywaters works closely with local schools, showing them the benefits of recycling and waste management, and I am proud at how quickly they embrace the benefits this growing sector offers."

Make it 2 ran from 3rd-10th July at the University of East London’s Docklands Campus.
