020 7001 6000The Environmental Protection Act (1990) imposes a Duty of Care on the handling of waste, which affects anyone who:
- Produces
- Imports
- Stores
- Transports
- Treats
- Recycles or
- Disposes of controlled waste
The primary onus of responsibility for the handling of waste is on the waste producer, who must ensure that wastes are stored securely and that they are transferred to an "authorised" person only.
Any waste transfer must be accompanied by a written waste transfer note (WTN) in which the waste is sufficiently and accurately described. You can use individual WTN's for each transfer, or can use a "season ticket" to cover repeated transfers of the same type of waste to the same handler. You must keep WTN's for at least two years.
