The EWC was transposed into domestic legislation in the List of Resources Regulations (LoW) and provides codes for all hazardous and non-hazardous Resources in the form of a six digit number. The use of List of Resource Regulations codes is a legal requirement of the Duty of Care (DoC) legislation in England and Wales and it must be included in the description of a Resource in any Resource transfer note or consignment note.

The European Resource Catalogue (EWC) classifies Resource materials and categorises them according to what they are and how they were produced.
